$1.75M Pizza.com Auction Update

Net Monetization : PIZZA.COM Auction Update

Pizza.com is being auction on Sedo.com (not by me) - yesterday the price was at $601,000 (see my earlier post) today the price has already risen to $1,750,000 and the reserve still hasn't been met (update : the price is now $2 million and the reserve has been met - so the name is sold for at least $2 million). The auction still has 5 days left to run.

It will be interesting to see if it is sold. There were reports that the reserve had been set at $1 million but this is clearly not the case. So the next 5 days should prove interesting. It is not unheard of for these sort of auctions to be a slightly murky affair but with the price at $1.75 million already it may turn out to be a very high price indeed.

The reserve hasn't been met yet, but it is presumed to be around $1 million.

Mortgage Fraud is Big Business

Mortgage Fraud is Big Business

If you are looking for a mortgage or selling your house, take care and make sure you are getting the best information available, particularly if you are looking for a First Time Buyer Mortgage

According to police in London mortgage fraud costs £700 million a year, although these figures are disputed by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), which also dismisses as ‘unsubstantiated’ claims that money raised from mortgage fraud is being used to finance organised crime.

The police are however determined to tackle mortgage fraud and have put forward proposals highlighting the impact of fraud on both businesses and properties.

The city police economic crime unit in an interview with the Financial Times said: "We are reacting to the pressure of the FSA, of other police forces."

Fifty extra staff have been recruited to assist with anti-fraud investigations and given the scale of the problem they may all find themselves working on mortgage scams.

What form does mortgage fraud take ? Mainly false surveyors’ valuations, which allow fraudsters to obtain mortgages which are much higher than the value of the property and bogus applications in false people's names by individuals who then do not make any repayments.

It's nice to know the police are doing something about it !

Top Domain Name Sales So Far This Year

Casino .de has just been sold for $625,000, that make sit the fifth highest so far this year, behind FUND.COM at $9,999,950 (were they too stingy to stump up the last $50 ?) DATARECOVERY.COM $1,659,000 - CRUISES.CO.UK $1,099,798 and iREPORT.COM sold to CNN for $750,000.

For the rest of the Top 100 so far this year check out
http://www.dnjournal.com/ytd-sales-charts.htm

.com is still by far the most sought after extension with 80 sales in the top 100, followed by 7 x .net, 4 x .co.uk, 4 x .org, 2 x .de, 2 .fr and 1 .tv (there were 7 .tv sales in the top 100 in the whole of 2007)

GreenMonday.com went for $76,500 but why ? It's just a parked page at the moment, maybe there's a fashion or TV show out there that I have missed. Perhaps colours + days of the week might be a new trend in domain names?

Net Monetization Online Auction Dotcom Names

4 Letter .com Domain Name Auction at Namepros

Namepros.com is holding an Exclusive Live Auction of 4 letter .com names
on March 22nd at 3PM EST (GMT-5). 4 letter .coms or LLLL.com can be either meaningful names such as fund.com (see list of previous sales and prices obtained below) or just 4 random letters such as ZUVW.com. They are the next best thing to 3 letter .coms. All the 3 letter .coms have already been sold and if you want to buy one from someone who already has one it will cost you many thousands of dollars at least. All the 4 letter .coms have also already been sold but their re-sale price is not yet as high as the 3 letter .coms. The list below shows the prices that have been obtained for 'meaningful' 4 letters - prices range from nearly $10 million down to a measly $100,000 - so if by any chance you have one of these names that don't sell it cheap ! It might also be a good idea to start stocking up on 5 letter .coms !

The auction is open to anyone, but you will need to register with namepros.com first - registration is free - even if you don't intend bidding you can still watch the proceedings online. There should be some good prices achieved.

The auction will be carried out in the Namepros chat room http://www.namepros.com/chat.php - to see the full list of names for auction go here : http://www.tymaier.com/listings/

Make Money Online from Clicks

Make Easy Money on the Internet

I suspect we would all like to make money online for very little effort. Neil Stanley, who lives in the UK, appears to be doing just that. He makes many hundreds of Her Majesty's British pounds online every week from his list of generic domain names.

Most of his domain names are .co.uk which makes me think maybe I should have gone down that route myself rather than concentrate on .in domains. Despite the recent upheavals in the domain name industry e.g. arbitrage no longer being allowed, Mr Stanley seems to be able to make money online with very little effort - he doesn't mention whether he went in for arbitrage (buying ads. at a low price then selling other das. at a higher price) himself, but the article in The Guardian is a recent one so perhaps he doesn't use arbitrage.

As I live in the UK myself perhaps it's about time I starting trying to develop my list of UK domain names ! Mr Stanley has a list of names you can see here - Alamex - some of them appear to be developed into mini-sites - others are just parked at NameDrive

Google Parked Page Opt Out for Advertisers

Google Says Advertisers Can Opt Out of Parked Pages

Parked pages are domain names that are not being used for websites, but on which ads. are placed so that the owner of the domain can make money from passing visitors - computingjobs[.]info is one such parked page. It has ads. for jobs in computing but not much else. Some advertisers would prefer it if their ads. didn't appear on such pages (this is not particularly logical, as these ads. convert into real customers just as well as other pages, but advertising is not a totally logical business) - so Google will now allow them to opt out from having their ads. appear on them.

This is BIG news for the 'domain parking' industry and parking companies such as

target="_blank">NameDrive
as, in the short-term at least, there may be a drop off in revenue from the ads. displayed on parked pages. In the long-term it is more difficult to see what is going to happen. There is the possibility that advertisers will discover that their ads. on parked pages were actually bringing in revenue and so will opt back in, if they ever opted out in the first place. There is also the very real probablity that someone will come up with a viable way of creating ready-made pages for people with lots of domain names but non-existent web-development skills.

What is required is a system that creates a web page with no effort on the part of the owner of the domain name. This web page must look like an 'ordinary' web page and must attract visitors, it should also update automatically at regular intervals. Finally, it must avoid the problem of duplicate content (which Google doesn't like at all) and the resulting problem of de-indexed pages. So if you are a developer who thinks he/she can crack this particular problem, please get in touch !

Anti-China Violence in Tibet

Protests in Tibet Against Chinese Occupation

Tibet protests - full story here : http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080314.wtibet0314/BNStory/International/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20080314.wtibet0314

Protesters in Tibet set fire to police vehicles and shops in the Tibetan capital Lhasa on Friday. This is part of the continuing demonstrations against the invasion of the Buddhist country by China 57 years ago.

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing advised Americans to stay away from Lhasa, stating it had “received firsthand reports from American citizens in the city who report gunfire and other indications of violence.”

The protests are the largest in 19 years by Tibetans seeking independence from China and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

Tourists are very worried about events as the Chinese are known for their brutal repression of any and they have been warned to stay away from the monasteries.
According to one tourist who refused to give her nam or nationality “The Red Army is downtown. It's not safe to walk around. All the major monasteries are closed. Tourists don't feel comfortable walking around because police are all over.”

Eliot Spitzer to Resign

Eliot Spitzer to Resign

It won't come as much of a surprise to anyone but Eliot Spitzer is set to announce his resignation at 11.30 East Coat time today. What was he thinking of? Is the question most often asked in connection with Mr Spitzer's behaviour. But who has the answer to to that.

The next question is will he avoid going to jail ? Has he resigned in some sort of plea bargain deal to avoid going to prison ?

There are also rumours that he may lose his law licence.

Also rumours that he may have been set up and the mob may have been involved in the form of the Gambinos. Lots of theories around !

Blog Monetization - The Basics

Make Money from Blogs - The Basics

After a year blogging and trying to make money online and somehow managing to get this blog up to a PR4, I have just found out that I have been doing a whole load of stuff wrong. I'm not totally surprised as despite the title of this blog it doesn't make much money, so I knew something was wrong somewhere along the line, I make more money from my other 'football' blog Free Online Sport

So how have I discovered what I have been doing wrong ? By finally stumbling across a blog that explains the basics of blogging in words of one syllable - hooray ! Where was this guy a year ago ? I don't know, but his blog is excellent, especially if you are using blogger, as it tells you how to set up blogger correctly, which boxes to tick and which to leave as they are etc... how to choose a blog title and description and no doubt a whole lot more that I haven't read yet. If you are using Wordpress there is a whole load of stuff that is relevant to blogging in general so you can skip the stuff about blogger. If you are a beginner and don't know whether you want to use Blogger or Wordpress, I strongly recommend Blogger, it is far easier to get started with and everything is totally free, you don't need to host anything anywhere, those nice people at Google take care of everything.

There's no point me repeating here what Mr Grizzly Brear says on his blog as that would just get me into a load of trouble with Adsense and it makes no sense as you are better off reading it from the horse's blog so to speak. So take a look at his blog here Bloggers Basics Making Money Online and I also recommend you read his article on backlinks here Scourge of Web 2.0

I will be working my way through his post to see what else I need to change.

Spitzer to Resign? Faces Prison.

Spitzer to Resign? May Face Prison

Eliot Spitzer is apparently in the process of drafting his resignation and could be negotating a plea bargain with prosecutors that may see him do prison time.

Quite incredible really and still unbelievable that he could have got himself into such a situation.

Monday

Spitzer and Client 9

Spitzer is Client 9

Eliot Spitzer is apparently the individual identified as "Client 9" in court papers filed last week in breakup of an international prostitution ring called the Emperors Club, The New York Times reported on Monday.

According to court papers Client 9 paid $4,300 to a $1,000-an-hour prostitute on Feb. 13. He also the train ticket to bring the woman from New York City to Washington, which maybe a violation of the federal Mann Act, which prohibits interstate transport of any woman for the purposes of "debauchery."

Violations of the Mann Act are punishable by fines of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison.

How could he be so amazingly stupid ? Full story here : http://www.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUSN1050068020080310?rpc=401

Governor Spitzer on Prostitution Shock

Eliott Spitzer Prostitution Claims

New York Governor Eliott Spitzer has been linked with claims of an expensive prositution ring. Spitzer was elected Governor of New York last year on a ticket of fighting sleaze and corruption.

On Monday, accompanied by his wife, Mr Spitzer gave no details about what it was he was alleged to have done and did not say if he intended staying in office. He answered questions.

“I have acted in ways that violated my obligation to my family, that violates my, or any, standards of right or wrong,” Mr Spitzer said. “I apologise first, and most importantly, to my family. I apologise to the public.”

"I do not believe that politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas, the public good and doing what is best for the state of New York. I must now dedicate some time to regaining the trust of my family...I will report back to you in short order.”

Mr Spitzer, himself prosecuted several prostitution rings while he was New York attorney general.

Last week federal prosecutors charged four people for organising an international prostitution and money laundering ring known as 'The Emperors Club VIP', which prosecutors said was intended for wealthy men.

The ring is alleged to have operated in Washington, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Paris and London, and elsewhere.

The New York Times report claims that Mr Spitzer was one of the unnamed “clients”.

Mr Spitzer became an internationally know figure in 2002 when he started probes into so-called conflicts of interest in equity research. He won more than $1.5bn in settlements from a dozen banks and set up guidelines designed to separate investment banking from research.

He also launched a probe into late trading and market timing by mutual fund companies, winning $3bn in settlements.

Wall Street apparently cheered when they heard the news of his downfall. How on earth did he let himself get mixed up with such a ring ?

He was elected Governor of New York last year on the promise that he would 'clean up' a 'seamy and unethical culture' in the state capital Albany.

There are already calls for his resignation and it is difficult to see how he can survive.

Make Money Trading Domain Names

Make Money Online Domain Name Trading

It's not new news but it is possible to make money online by trading domain names. 33 million domain names were registered in 2007 alone. They can be sold via forums such as Namepros or even on Ebay.

According to Theodore di Stefano on Ecommerce.com "Prices of domain names .... are being driven upwards through auctions. ... The New York Times recently ran an article titled "Coins in the New Realm." Brad Stone, the writer of that article, said: "The practitioners' fundamental assertion -- that names of Web sites can be valuable, cash-generating assets just like stocks, bonds or property -- appears to be gaining a broader acceptance that veteran domainers are not accustomed to and may not be totally comfortable with."

Mr di Stefano feels that the virtual real estate craze is not going to go away anytime soon. "Entrepreneurs are continually registering what they regard as killer domain names that might have some value in the near future. They are watching trends, emerging industries and new applications"

The article makes an interesting read giving an insight into the future possibilities of domain name trading, you can read the whole article here - http://www.ecommercetimes.com/rsstory/61967.html?welcome=1204901145

It's not as easy as it sounds but with a bit of work and research there is money to be made - and while you are waiting to sell your domain names you can park them with a company such as NameDrive to make money from ads. placed on your domain name page. It's free!

$1.65M Purchase of DataRecovery.com

$1.65M - Highest Domain Sale of the Year So Far

DataRecovery.com has been sold for $1,659,000 making it the highest reported domain sale so far this year. The buyer is ESS Data Recovery who say that they bought the domain in order to set themselves apart from the increasing number of data recovery companies. This shows the value of generic domain names and is another example of a company purchasing a generic domain name to set themselves apart from their competition.

They already own essdatarecovery.com and will keep it and redirect datarecovery.com to it.

According to the company President Ben Carmitchel “... existing clients and new clients alike will benefit from easily finding our website.”

Domain sales so far this year also include Cruises.co.uk which was sold for $ 1,099,798 the moral of the story is if you have generic domains you are in a good position, if you haven't got any you should try and get some !

Other six-figure sales include Auditors.com $125,000 and Skyport.com $101,000 .

Blogs That Make Money

Top 50 Money Making Blogs

In the world of blogs that blog about how to make money online it's always useful to know which are the most successful and therefore which actually make the most money online and how they do it.

I've just come across an excellent list over at talkgold.com - Money Making Blogs. They have put together the top 52 which they have ranked using a formula which they say rates the 'value of information and uniqueness' . The list is very useful but unfortunately it misses out one extremely important point - it doesn't tell us how much these blogs earn.

In that respect Paula Mooney's list Paula's List of Top Money Making Blogs was a lot more interesting and detailed, it is a year old now but still fascinating neverthless. To see the 19 blogs that make over $4,000 a month and the sort of Alexa ranking you need to aim for to join them - have a look here Top Blog Earners and Alexa Ranking

From this recent list my personal favourites are Dosh Dosh, John Cow (no 'h') and CourtneyTuttle. There are also some new names I will need to have a look at when I get more time. If you think you should be on the list but aren't just leave a comment.
